Goodbye McLeod Ganj

Sorry it's been a while - finding an internet cafe above 56K proving to be a bit tricky in some parts!

The past few days have been bittersweet for us. Had our last day in McLeod Ganj with Long Jon and Smart Fred (as dubbed by some local boys!), took them to the Dalai Lama HQ and to the Tibet Museum, then waved them off at the bus stop. We might see them in Delhi as they've offered us the use of their shower (we have to stop over in Delhi for half a day whilst waiting for our train to Varanasi) - we'll just have to wait and see!

Our final day in McLeod Ganj swiftly arrived - we're sad to leave, but feel that our time here is done. We stayed here a lot longer than expected, and have a lot of wonderful memories. We decided to shoot a documentary here based on the Free Tibet project. We have three interviews (two of which are in Tibetan - so if you speak the lingo, or know someone who does, get in touch!!) and lots of GV's and a couple of links that could be cut and replaced with fact pages. Hope we can do something with the material. One of our interviewees could potentially be very good, he used to work for the Tibetan Government as a bodyguard to the Dalai Lama - and spoke great English. He was absolutely lovely, more than happy to be dragged out of his office and be interviewed by two mad English girls!

As you know - we booked tickets for a deluxe bus down to Delhi. Deluxe bus, my ass. Lydia normally gets the window seat, so decided to grab it before she did. Never again. She is having the window seat ALL THE TIME from nowon. It was coming down with rain when we left McLeod Ganj and my window had a leak. One hour of drip, drip, drip, drip, drip - not pleasant I'll tell you. Still, what can you expect for 500Rs? Oh, but the fun didn't end there - we stopped off in the middle of the night for a toilet break at some hotel in the middle of the sticks. 20 women. 1 toilet. You do the maths. Oh, and having little legs I kept sliding down my chair and banging my knees on the chair in front. Cue one not very happy Caroline in Delhi.

Arrived in Delhi at the unearthly hour of 6.30am, both of us being tired and grumpy were really not in the mood for the flock of vultures (i.e. rickshaw drivers) that descended upon us. It's actually quite interesting how they fight over the tourists - a couple of slaps, kicks and punches between drivers is not unheard of. Caught a rickshaw to Fred and Jon's hotel and were royally ripped off. But we don't care. What's 200Rs for a cold shower, clean clothes and clean hair??

I'll end the moaning and put something positive up at some point!

Caroline xx

I know that Caroline saying that I normally get window seats - that is not true!! I had only one window seat so far, so I offered her a window seat, unfortunately she ended up soaking wet. The worst was I have long legs! The seat was so short - blimey! But we survived after 12 hours trip!

Lydia - a fellow backpacker of Caroline :)
